A halftone screen is used to simulate multiple shades of a color when printing with a single ink. For example: when printing with black ink, it is possible to create the appearance of varying shades of gray, or to go from light pink to dark red with a single ink pass. This is done by using halftone dots, which vary in size to create this illusion of continuos tone. Light areas will be made up of lots of small dots, while the dark areas has many larger dots. A close look at any black and white newspaper photograph will illustrate this point, as will clicking the image above.
